LED indicator colors

The device is equipped with Red+Blue+Green (RGB) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to display various colors and patterns. Each color or pattern represents a specific system status or message notification.

Error

Kernel initiated in the bootloader but insufficient power to continue.
See below.

Battery status is displayed on the lock screen once the operating system has fully loaded. When the screen is unlocked, the battery status is shown in the status line at the top of the screen.

Red

The device state of charge is represented by a red notification LED.

Solid red

A nominal charging state is represented by a solid red indicator light. This is expected behavior while charging.

Half-second flashes once per second

If the red indicator LED flashes red for a 0.5 seconds once per second, a charging error has been detected and the cahrge controller has paused the charging process. Before proceeding, verify that the battery is properly inserted into the device, then check the indicator LED again.

Using the OEM charger and cable

If issues continue while charging the device using the original charger, the battery may be getting too warm. The charge controller will pause charging when battery temperature exceeds 40°C. To check battery temperature, launch the Usage application then tap or click on the Thermal tab. Look for the bq25890-charger temperature sensor.

If the reported temperature is too high, there may be inadequate airflow around the device or the ambient temperature may be too high. In this case, try moving the charger and phone to a cooler location.

NOT using the OEM charger and cable

If not using the AC adapter and power cable that came with the device:

  1. Disconnect the charging cable from the device

  2. Wait until the red indicator LED stops flashing and remains off

  3. Wait 20 minutes

  4. Use the OEM charger

Other possible issues

Charging may also pause when the battery is missing or that a charging fault was detected.

Note that there is another flashing red signal, vizualized by very short blinks every ~10 seconds. This indicates that the BQ25895 chip (a battery charge management chip from Texas Instruments (TI)) is too hot. This may be normal under prolonged intensive use.

Contact Purism Support if the above does not solve your issue.

Green

A flashing green indicator LED is a symptom of the bootloader initiating but resetting as a result of insufficient power. This is usually the result of a battery charging issue. Follow the steps below to work around the problem:

  1. Ensure that the USB charging cable is powered and fully inserted into the device.

  2. Enable trickle-charging by holding down the Volume Up button for 5 seconds.

  3. Once the light stops flashing, remove then insert the power cable while still holding the Volume Up button.

  4. Release the Volume Up button and allow the battery to charge for at least an hour.

  5. Unplug the USB cable from the phone.

  6. Hold down the Power button for 18 seconds.

  7. The device should power on and the indicator LED should illuminate green.

  8. Plug in the USB charging cable.

If the above steps do not help, follow the recharging procedure.

Yellow

A yellow indicator LED signifies that the bootloader is attempting to load the kernel but detected insufficient power for one of the following reasons:

  • The battery voltage is low and USB-C power was not provided prior to the bootloader running the USB power check.

  • The battery voltage is low and there is insufficient USB charging current.

  • The battery voltage is zero and there is insufficient USB charging current.

Set the WWAN (cellular modem) and WLAN (wi-fi and Bluetooth) hardware kill switches to the disabled position.

Follow the recharging procedure if the steps above do not help.
